Bryony House is a 24 bed shelter for abused women and their children. Established in 1978, the Halifax Transition House Association opened Bryony House as the first transition house in Nova Scotia. The Halifax Transition House Association receives partial funding from the Provincial Department of Community Services but relies heavily on the support of the community for; grants, foundations, donations, and fundraising to maintain its current level of services. Each year Bryony House offers safety and shelter to approximately 450 women and children and answers over 2500 distress calls. A resident could be your mother, sister, friend or neighbour. Women who contact us come from many walks of life, socio-economic classes and cultural backgrounds. The issue they have in common is that they are in, or are fleeing, an abusive intimate relationship. The Halifax Transition House Association believes all women and their children have the right to live free of violence.
